Review of The Last Adventurer
This is one of those manhwas that, at first, you have to make an effort to get through, but it starts getting really good after a few chapters. Let's break it down:
The Art#
Well, there's not much to say. The art is beautiful and consistent, but nowhere near the best. The biggest problem is actually that, in some moments, the transitions from one panel to another are very abrupt, to the point where it's difficult to understand some fight scenes. Suddenly, you see an effect, and in the next panel, the character is flying into a wall, and sometimes it's impossible to tell what was supposed to have happened. However, this doesn't interfere too much with the overall quality of the story.
The Progression#
I think the characters' progression is, at the very least, random, and sometimes even forced. At certain points, they suddenly power up, and sometimes everyone does it at the same time. Personally, I find this pretty unnecessary. I like the idea of each character having their own "power-up moment", for example, a fight that pushed them to their limit, some kind of inspiration, or something along those lines. Preferably, I think it's interesting to actually see that moment, which is often omitted here.
Another thing that bothered me at the beginning was the way they use their powers and the extremely shallow explanations about the items, portals, and so on. This was later explained, and even though the explanation makes perfect sense, it still feels somewhat forced. For example:
Skills can only be used through items, and depending on the level of your circle, you can use the item more times before the cooldown. It seems to make sense at first, but the user can only use an item compatible with their element, so theoretically, they should be able to use the element itself without the item. But, as I said, this is clarified throughout the story.
The Story#
The story is a case apart. Although it is extremely cliché, it develops well as a whole, the plots are interesting, and the characters are charismatic. My only criticism is that some characters are heavily wasted, while others simply never leave my screen. As I mentioned before, there is no real individual development for the side characters, with a few exceptions.
That said, the ending was very good. The story wrapped things up really well and was quite emotional. It's the kind of story that won't be your favorite manhwa, but will definitely leave you missing it. Read it with low expectations and already knowing that this is one of those stories that is almost identical to others you've already read, but it's still a unique story.
Even though it used that trope that I personally hate, where they go back in time before everything goes to shit and completely invalidate all the development of the characters' connections and their adventure itself. At least in this one, they reunite, and considering what happened with Dibo, who remembered his past life for some reason, perhaps they might eventually remember, even though this isn't shown, leaving only that scene with the pirate hinting that she felt something familiar.Spoilers#
One example of what I mentioned earlier about wasted characters is the pirate's sister, who appeared when she used Summon Crew. It was a skill that was only used once, or the Apostle commanders, who never really joined the fight (only a little at the end, but they didn't even get enough screen time to become memorable).
